Brenden Goldman — Woodworker and founder of Goldman's Grain, Raleigh NC

Brenden Goldman

Woodworker and craftsman based in Raleigh, NC. I build heirloom toys and hardwood goods from solid maple, walnut, cherry, and oak. No shortcuts, no plywood, no MDF — just real wood made to survive childhood and be worth keeping forever.

Goldman's Grain started with a single rule: if it isn't solid hardwood, it doesn't leave my shop. That rule still holds for every rocking horse, tool set, building block, and name sign I make.

Real Wood. Built to Last Generations.

I started building kids' toys because I was fed up. Walk into any store and you'll find "wooden" toys made from MDF, particle board, or cheap pine held together with glue and hope. They look fine on a shelf. Give them to a two-year-old and see how long they last.

Real hardwood is different. Maple, walnut, cherry, oak — these are materials that get better over time. They pick up character. They survive kids, siblings, spills, and the general chaos of childhood. And when it's all over, they still look good enough to pass down.

That's what I'm building at Goldman's Grain. A rocking horse your kid will hand to their kid. A tool set carved from solid walnut that a toddler today might pull out of a box for their own children someday. Building blocks so solid and beautiful that parents keep them out as decor when the kids are done playing.

Everything is made to order in Raleigh, NC — cut, sanded, and finished by hand. No warehouse inventory. No shortcuts. Just real wood built for real life, and built to outlast it.

Why Heirloom Hardwood Matters

Kids' toys should be safe, durable, and worth keeping. Here's what that means at Goldman's Grain.

100% Solid Hardwood

Maple, walnut, cherry, and oak. No MDF. No particle board. No mystery finishes kids shouldn't be chewing on. Just real wood, safe for tiny hands.

🎠

Heirloom Quality

A rocking horse your grandkids will play with. Building blocks that become family heirlooms. Toys built to survive childhood and still look beautiful after decades.

Real Tools for Real Kids

A solid walnut tool set teaches kids the weight, feel, and respect of real tools — not the hollow plastic version. They can feel the difference, even at two years old.

Four Hardwoods. Zero Compromises.

Each wood is chosen for its character, grain, and durability — the way it ages, the way it feels in a child's hand, and the way it looks 40 years from now.

Hard Maple

Light, fine-grained, and incredibly durable. The go-to for toys, signs, and kitchen pieces — takes detail work beautifully and ages to a warm honey tone. Safe, hard, and smooth.

Black Walnut

Deep, rich, and unmistakable. Walnut is the luxury hardwood — heavy, strong, and stunning in toys like tool sets and building blocks that need to feel serious in little hands.

Black Cherry

Warm reddish-brown that deepens with age and sunlight. Cherry gets better every year, developing a rich patina over time — a wood that visibly earns its heirloom status.

White Oak

Pronounced grain, golden tone, and serious strength. White oak is the classic American hardwood — bold, characterful, built to stand up to kids, kitchens, and real life.

5 Stars. Every Time.

Such an easy review to write! These walnut blocks are beautiful and Brendan threw in a few maple wood tools for tiny hands and even those are intricately crafted. Perfect heirloom blocks that look nice sitting in a basket in the living room.
