No shortcuts. No plywood. No stains to fake a look the wood doesn't have. Here's exactly what happens between a raw plank and your front door.
Every Goldman's Grain piece — whether it's a rocking horse, a name sign, or a toy car — goes through the same process. Solid hardwood, hand-selected. Cut and shaped to spec. Sanded through every grit until it's silk-smooth. Finished with food-safe oil that brings out the real color of the wood. Made to order in Raleigh, NC.
Before any wood gets touched, we sketch out dimensions, think through grain direction, and figure out exactly how each part will be cut and assembled. Small decisions here — like which way the grain runs on a toy horse or name sign — make a real difference in the finished piece.
For custom orders, this is where we work out your personalization details too: letter spacing on name signs, sizing for specific age groups, or any modifications from the standard design.
Not all hardwood is the same. We source solid maple, walnut, cherry, and white oak from trusted suppliers — no plywood cores, no MDF, no veneers, no engineered composites. Ever.
We pick each plank for grain, color, and character. The wood you see on your finished piece is the same solid board we selected at the start. What you see is what it is, all the way through.
Each piece is cut on the table saw or band saw, then shaped with a router, jig, or carving tool depending on the design. A rocking horse has different curves than a name sign or a toy car — but every single cut gets the same level of attention.
We don't outsource cutting or use pre-cut blanks. Every part is made from scratch, to spec, in the shop. That's what lets us offer real customization on almost everything.
Every surface goes through multiple grits of sandpaper — starting coarse to remove tool marks, working up to fine for the texture that makes people want to pick it up and feel it again. No shortcuts on grit progression.
Every edge is eased so there are no sharp corners anywhere on the piece. That matters most when the people using it are small children. Smooth enough that you'd hand it to a toddler without a second thought.
We finish every piece with a natural, food-safe oil — no polyurethane, no lacquer, no stains. The oil soaks into the grain, brings out the real depth and color of the wood, and protects it without building up a plastic-feeling surface coat.
It's completely non-toxic and safe for babies and toddlers. And unlike surface finishes that peel over time, an oil finish actually improves with use. A quick re-oil every year or two and your piece looks better than when it arrived.
Before anything leaves the shop, every piece gets a final check — surface, edges, finish quality, and fit on anything with moving parts. If it's not right, it doesn't ship. No exceptions.
Then it's packed carefully and shipped free to your door, anywhere in the US. Most orders are out the door within a week. Custom and personalized pieces are typically the same — we build fast because we build one at a time, to order, not in batches sitting on a shelf.
These aren't marketing words. They're the actual standards every piece is held to before it leaves the shop.
